The Living Coast Discovery Center in Chula Vista, California, is located on a part of the Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. These wetlands are alive and crawling with a variety of birds, reptiles, and other native animals to the coast of Southern California. A visit to this living museum will give you and your family a new appreciation for nature.
There are a variety of tours that happen during different hours of the day. You can take a docent led tour of certain parts of the Living Coast Discovery Center. Also, you have the ability to explore the area on your own. Be sure to check out the times in the day when you can see some of the animals being fed by staff. All of the feeding schedules happen in the afternoon. Plan to visit the center for at minimum two hours.
This discovery center is home to many amazing creatures that you can see up close. Some of this unique wildlife and sealife include:
● Sea Turtles- swimming about the lagoon outside of the center, these fun creatures greet guests at the door.
● Sharks- there are a variety of beautiful sharks that swim in the aquarium.
● Stingrays- during the visit you can have the opportunity to touch stingrays that are floating along the surface of the water.
● Birds- there are many different native birds that inhabit the Aviary at the discovery center. You can walk into this amazing space and see the variety of shorebirds that call this their home. One of the species of birds that you will see up close and personal is the regal Bald Eagle. Also, you can take a walk down the raptor row and see many birds of prey that live together.
Not only is this center home of many amazing animals, but also the plant life is stunning. You can visit nature walking trails. Also, there is a native plant garden that is well maintained with beautiful and unique flowers.
