This award winning playground is located within Philadelphia's Fairmount Park near North 33rd Street and Oxford Avenue. The star of the playground is a 24,000 square foot playhouse (mansion) open to kids under 5 and babies (accompanied by an adult). The mansion has been made by master craftsmen with high ceilings, elegant staircases and intricate woodwork. The mansion has four stories and includes the 44 foot long and 12 foot wide wooden Ann Newman Giant Slide which can be used by 12 kids simultaneously. There is also a "Play Pod" with a larger than life see-saw and climbing apparatus as well as a swing complex called Swing City. In the tumbling room kids can find games, toys and activities. There is a book corner; a tricycle room; a mini-passenger train which the kids can drive; a kitchen where the kids can "cook" and Smithville – a kid-size town. Although the play-mansion is only open to kids under 5 the rest of the playground is open to all kids under 10 years old.
The entire playground covers 6.5 acres and the natural landscape has been left as it was, without being over developed or landscaped. This means that kids can experience open fields, woods, hills and dales. In all there are over 50 accessible pieces of play equipment.
The Smith Memorial Playground and Mansion was established in 1899 by Richard and Sarah Smith. The playground is visited by more than 1000 children a day and has been a mainstay of entertainment for families living in Philly and visitors for over 100 years!
All kids must be accompanied by an adult and all adults must be accompanied by a child! The playground is a safe environment, the apparatus is well maintained and there is staff on hand to insure everyone plays safely. The fact that play areas are divided into use by different age groups (babies, under 5s and under 10s) makes the playground even safer. Kids can feel relaxed and liberated, they have fun while also enjoying the expansive spaces and discovering new things. The playground is located at 3500 Reservoir Drive. Perhaps the best thing about the Smith Playground and Mansion is that admission is free! When in Philly visit this free, fun and family-friendly attraction.
