The museum first opened in 1982 and up to now has had over ten million visitors, both New York natives and visitors from around the country and world. The main attraction of the museum is the Intrepid, a historic landmark and one of the most successful aircrafts in history. The Intrepid is a famous aircraft that served in World War II. It is now one of the most visited attractions and sightseeing in New York City. It has participated in three tours of duty in Vietnam, and served as submarine surveillance during the Cold War. It was also a primary recovery vessel for NASA. Now the ship serves as an educational monument and represents the many people who served during past wars.
The museum is a great educational destination for children and adults alike. The museum features exhibits such as Kamikaze: Day of Darkness and Day of Light, and other displays that museum visitors can interact with. Kids will have lots of fun riding in the A-6 Cockpit Simulator, touring the National Flight Zone, and the Growler Submarine. The museum has many educational programs that thousands of school children participate in every year. There is also the popular Fleet Week celebration to honor those who have served in the military. The museum has a massive collection of planes, which includes a World War II Avenger torpedo bomber, an F-14 Tomcat, an A-12 Blackbird spy plane, and a plethora of other aircrafts. It also holds a Concord jet, which flew across the Atlantic in as little as three hours.
There are also other things such as uniforms of soldiers of past wars, and their personal items as well. There are numerous interactive exhibits. NASA also decided to send surviving space shuttles to be featured in the museum. The Space Shuttle Enterprise was one of those shuttles. The navigation bridge is another one of the must visit sights in the museum. So when looking for attractions and sightseeing in NYC, the US Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space museum is definitely one of those places you have to visit.
