New York City is the land of dreams and their realization. There is so much to explore in this beautiful place that no matter how much time you spend here, you will always want more. When we come to Brooklyn, we find a spot away from the mainland that can offer you a blessed relief from the hectic and busy life of the city.
Coney Island is connected to the mainland with the help of a landfill. This small island is only 4 miles long and 0.5 miles wide. However, it is a pop culture icon and is repeatedly called America’s first amusement park. Currently, it is not only an amusement park but a beach and resort as well.
The three main amusement parks located here are Dreamland, Luna Park and Astroland. The Wonder Wheel and the Cyclone are the major attractions for the people who visit Coney Island. The Cyclone is also distinguished as the most copied roller coaster in the world. The Boardwalk also attracts visitors and hosts an annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade along with the popular Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Another famous event is the Coney Island Spring Gala, a fundraising event for the island. You may also want to buy tickets to the AVP Annual Volleyball tournament held here every summer.
Coney Island is all about the fun side of America. It is amazing how a fantasy land co-exists with the busiest neighborhood of USA. The tickets to the rides can be bought at entrance gates. However, the prices keep changing according to the time of the year. Most of the people visit the island during summer, which also shoots up the price. You can check the current price on their website before planning a visit.
You will get a wonderful blend of fun rides and delicious food in the Coney Island. You can stroll through the Boardwalk or have fun go-carting. When tired simply slip into the nearest eatery or sunbathe in the bright sunshine on the beach. You can go cycling, play basketball or volleyball or visit the aquarium surrounded by a 332 foot long sculptured concrete wall.
Don’t forget to visit the Abe Stark Ice Skating Rink and the MCU Park. Coney Island is also the home to a minor league football team, Brooklyn Cyclones. If you are an avid basketball fan, you can watch them practice here for the league matches.
Coney Island saw some severe damage after Hurricane Sandy, but the good news is that most of the Island has been restored and is all set to welcome its guests this summer. Pack your bags and don’t forget your sunscreen.
