The Aquarium of the Americas is one of the largest aquariums in the United States. This facility is run by the Audubon Institute that also runs the Audubon Park and Zoo that is situated in the city of New Orleans. The aquarium was officially opened in the year 1990. This facility is situated near the Great Mississippi River. The aquarium offers visitors and guests a variety of 500 species of sea creatures and different types of fishes. From its name, this aquarium represents different aquatic animals that can be found in the Americas.

Upon entering the aquarium, visitors can already see the very visible big cylindrical glass structure. The inside of the structure houses different kinds of plants and trees that can be found in the Amazon Rainforest. Visitors can walk in the wooden steps and bridges through the steamy place of forest plants and fauna. One of the attractions in Audubon Aquarium is a very rare type of white alligator. This alligator can be found inside the river gallery of the aquarium complex. Visitors can see the white alligator and they can also take pictures of it. The aquarium hosts different kinds of amphibians. Visitors will enjoy seeing sea utters, jelly fish and penguins.

African BlackfootedRecently, the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas announced the hatching of an endangered species of penguin called the African Blackfooted. This endangered kind of penguin was successfully hatched inside the facility last March. Today, the penguins are now included in the colony of penguins and have been a part of the exhibit. This is a proof of the aquarium’s ability to breed and hatch different types of animals. Also included in this magnificent aquarium are different species of sharks swimming around the wide shark cove. Wobbegong and carpet sharks are some of the most active sharks that can be seen inside the aquarium. Another species of shark was added in the Audubon Aquarium. 5 adult sand tiger sharks were donated by a private institution to replenish the loss of many sharks caused by hurricane “Katrina”.

The Aquarium of the Americas is a perfect refuge from the heat of the sun and from the rain. The aquarium is a very educational place for children. Not only that they can see different kinds of marine life, but they can be also educated on how to protect and care for the animals that live in the sea.
