The average kid might not be that excited when you tell them that part of their trip will include a visit to a museum, but that is sure to change when they catch sight of the colorful entrance to the Children’s Museum of Houston. Located in the legendary Museum District, the Children’s Museum is a hands-on experience that allows kids the chance to broaden their minds as they learn through play. It stands to reason that the museum would be able to pull that off so well, especially when you consider that it was a group of Houston parents that conceived of the idea back in 1980. The success of the museum saw it undergo a massive expansion back in 2009, so that it could better serve the more than 850,000 visitors that pass through its doors every year.
The interior of the museum is as bright and colorful as the exterior, with roads leading to all the different exhibits. The toughest part of your whole day might be deciding where to start first as each of the exhibits offers its own unique fun learning experience. Kida who like computers will likely get a kick out of the Cyberchase exhibit, as they play an interactive game that uses math and critical thinking skills to foil the plot of a super villain intent on stealing cyberspace.
Another great exhibit is the Inventor’s Workstation, where kids can put their ideas into practice by creating a new invention. Like all of the other exhibits in the museum, the Invention Workshop is intended to get kids interested and excited by allowing them to play with the exhibits. While the museum is indeed intended for the little ones, as a parent you are going to find it difficult not to get down there and play, too. That is the beauty of the Children’s Museum of Houston, in that it promotes interactivity with the exhibits, as well as interaction between parent and child.
The museum is open to the public six days per week, with Monday’s being the only day that it closes. Be sure to check out the website for a full list of opening and closing times, as well as looking into the possibility of holding birthday parties and other private functions in the museum. This is a great place for the whole family to visit, but with so many cool, fun things to do, we recommend that you get there early and plan on staying late.
