Located on the National Mall and between the Smithsonian’s Arts and Industries Building and the Sackler Gallery of Art, the National Museum of African Art in Washington D.C. should be on the must-visit list of anyone planning to spend their day amongst the Smithsonian’s many offerings. With the exception of Christmas Day, the museum is open every day from 10 AM to 5:30 PM. Admission is free.

There are a number of fascinating African art exhibitions and features to take in at the National Museum of African Art in Washington D.C. From everything there is to see and experience at this particular Smithsonian wing, you will take away an unforgettable impression of the extraordinary voices and perspectives that have shaped African art through the years, and continue to shape African art to this very day.

Enjoy some of the current art and programs that are currently on view. Roger Ballen has been shooting remarkable black and white photographs of rural Afrikaners in their homes for almost 25 years. The National Museum of African Art in Washington D.C. will be exhibiting his work, until February 2014 under the title of Lines, Marks, and Drawings: Through the Lens of Roger Ballen. Earth Matters: Land as Material and Metaphor in the Arts of Africa is another feature to enjoy. On display until January 2014, the exhibition profiles 100 powerful works of art from the 18th to 21st centuries. This is a wonderful opportunity to study the unique artistic relationships enjoyed by African communities with the earth itself.

African Mosaic: Celebrating a Decade of Collecting will show you an incredible range of pieces collected by the museum over the course of the past decade. Another impressive offering from the museum’s ongoing exhibitions is the Walt Disney-Tishman African Art Highlights. This collection spotlights unique and rare works of art that have been taken from sub-Saharan Africa.
