Vacations can be expensive, but they don't have to be. It is very possible to have a great vacation on a small or smaller budget. Below are my tips to save money so that you don't break your budget trying to have a fun time.
Vacation during the off-season.
Planning your vacation during your destination's off-season can usually save you a decent amount of money. Your flights may be cheaper, activities may be cheaper, and your hotel will probably be cheaper as well.
However, if you are going to do this, make sure to check the weather and anything else that you may need in order to plan your trip. If a destination is having their off-season because of their cold months of the year, then planning an outdoor swimming vacation during those months probably won't be something that you would want to do.
Find coupons ahead of time.
If you know where you are going and have somewhat of an idea of what you will be doing, I would look into finding coupons ahead of time. Accommodations, activities, and restaurants usually offer some sort of coupon, you just have to find them.
I know someone who planned all of their restaurants ahead of time for their vacation and used Restaurant.com for nearly all of their dining so that they could save a lot of money. This requires some planning, but using websites such as Restaurant.com can lead to a good amount of savings when you are on your vacation.
Be frugal with your accommodation choice.
It is possible to spend a lot on your accommodation choice, but it is also very possible to stay at a great place and save a lot of money too. Keep in mind when booking your accommodations that other fees may be included, so just because the base rate is low it does not mean that overall the accommodation will be cheaper. You should ask about resort fees, internet fees, parking fees, taxes, cleaning fees, and more. IT can all add up quickly!
You could try a short-term rental, bid for your hotel (such as on Priceline), sign up for hotel e-mails lists and more. If you have a lot of people traveling with you, then renting a home with multiple bedrooms may save you a decent amount of money.
Also, my favorite way to save money is to reach out to the specific hotel you are interested in and asking what the lowest price is that they could give you.
Dine in your room occasionally.
Getting out and enjoying the local food is a great thing, but if you want to save a little money you may be able to go to the grocery store ahead of time and make some of your meals. Not all accommodations have kitchens, microwaves, and so on though, so you should check to see first.
Different meals that you could make include: sandwiches, cereal, pizza, and more.
