Memorial Day is quickly approaching. It is a time to honor the men and women in the United States military who have passed away while serving the country. It also is the beginning of Summer for many, and there are celebrations all across the United States for it.
Here are five possible Memorial Day getaways for you and your family or friends to take:
1. The Florida Keys.
If you are in the southern part of Florida, then the Florida Keys can be a fun place for you to visit for a long weekend getaway. Depending on where exactly you want to go in the Keys, it may take around 5 hours (more or less), but it can be a fun drive and a great vacation that is not too far away from home.
In the Florida Keys you are able to have fun in the sun, listen to Caribbean music, and walk the fun little streets where everyone is on a bike and everyone is laid back looking to just have some fun. One thing that I missed out when I last visited Key West was visiting the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum - this is something you should try to fit in when you visit.
2. Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
I have a few friends going to Gatlinburg, Tennessee this year for Memorial Day, and many others also visit around the year as well. This can be an easy Memorial Day vacation destination if you are from the surrounding area. Gatlinburg can be a great place to visit if you are looking to enjoy the mountains and have fun in the outdoors. You can stay in a cabin, go camping, find a trail to hike, and more.
3. St. Louis, Missouri.
This is where I live, so, of course, I would include it on this list. St. Louis is one of the top BBQ cities in the United States, and BBQ is one of the main meals for Memorial Day. There are plenty of different BBQ joints that you could try, such as Pappy's Smokehouse, Vernon's BBQ, The Shaved Duck, and more.
There are also plenty of other things that you can do while in St. Louis. You could visit the free St. Louis Zoo, go to Six Flags St. Louis, take a ride up the Gateway Arch, swim at Johnson Shutins (this is a MUST if you are in St. Louis in the warmer months) go on one of the numerous brewery tours in the St. Louis area, and more. You could also drive to any of the numerous lakes or rivers and canoe, kayak, paddle board, and more.
4. Washington, D.C.
Memorial Day is meant to honor those who served in the military, and one of the most patriotic ways to do this is probably to visit Washington, D.C. There is a parade, performances, and several ceremonies to honor the military. There are so many different things for you to do to honor Memorial Day when you are in this region.
5. Palm Springs, California.
I couldn't forget the west coast of the United States. The Air Museum in this city hosts an annual flower drop which is amazing. They release over 3 thousand carnations to honor the United States military who have passed away. There is also tons of sunshine here, and Joshua Tree National Park for you to hike.
