St. Louis, Missouri is a fun city to visit. I live in St. Louis and have lived here since I was born (I did live in Chicago as a young child for several years as well though), and there are plenty of things to do.

St. Louis is not usually a top vacation spot in the U.S., but if you ever find yourself in the St. Louis area, then you should definitely make a trip to the St. Louis Gateway Arch.

The St. Louis Gateway Arch is a monument that is 630 feet tall (or also 63 stories tall or also 7,560 inches). It consists of stainless steel and it is the tallest man made monument in the United States. The Gateway Arch weighs 17,246 tons. It is also Missouri's tallest building, and it's actually the tallest arch in the whole entire world.

The Gateway Arch overlooks the Mississippi River, and the other side faces the city of St. Louis. It provides for a very beautiful view of the city of St. Louis in Missouri. When you make the journey to the top of the Gateway Arch, you can see 30 miles in any direction, which is definitely a site to see.

History of the Gateway Arch.

The Gateway Arch was created because the leaders of St. Louis wanted something to help put St. Louis back on the map again and bring travel dollars to the St. Louis, Missouri area.  The structure was also built as a monument to Thomas Jefferson and to serve as a gateway to the west.

Who designed the Gateway Arch? It was designed in 1947 by Eero Saarinen. The construction for the Gateway Arch began in the month of February of 1963 and the Gateway Arch was completed in October of 1965. The Gateway Arch was publicly opened in June of the year of 1967 for visitors to go inside of.

The cost for building the Gateway Arch was nearly $100,000,000 in today's dollars, or a little over $13,000,000 in the 1960's.

Is the Gateway Arch safe?

Many people can get nervous when thinking about going up the Gateway Arch. It is very tall and if you are afraid of heights, then it is a fear that you would have to get over before you make the journey to the top.

The Gateway Arch was built to be very safe. It is safe even if there is an earthquake. It was built to stay strong during harsh winds as well.

Information about getting to the top of the Gateway Arch.

There are two trams. If one tram is running then there are trams every 10 minutes to get to the top. If both are running, then there is a visit to the top every five minutes. Each tram can hold approximately 240 passengers. There are also exactly 1,076 stairs to the top, but visitors are not allowed to walk up the steps, so do not worry.

Information about the windows at the Gateway Arch.

There are 16 windows on each side of the observation deck at the Gateway Arch. They are fairly small, and many visitors wonder about this. The windows at the Gateway Arch are small because there is so much pressure used on the legs of the arch, and if the observation windows are larger then they might break or buckle under the pressure.

Cost of visiting the Gateway Arch.

The cost for making a visit to the St. Louis Gateway Arch depends. You can enter the Gateway Arch for free. If you want to go to the top of the Gateway Arch, the price is $10 for an adult ticket.
