Prairie Avenue District - 5.0 out of 5 based on 1 vote
The Prairie Avenue of Chicago is a unique district in itself. Holding a special historical significance to the city, the place was the most fashionable district during the last decades of the 19th century. At that time, it was only the wealthiest of wealthiest people who would come here to reside. The place was the grandest part of the city and was the center of high society. That being said, it was chosen as a Chicago Landmark in 1979. However, during the Great Depression, a lot of these houses were demolished. The consequences became even grave during the World War II. As a result of…
In an era when sports teams are making the move to newer stadiums that generate more revenue, the Chicago Cubs are a team apart. They still make their home in the stadium that has been around since 1916, and fans and visitors to the city simply wouldn’t have it any other way. Baseball is more about tradition that just about any other sport, yet teams are all too quick to abandon that in favor of the almighty dollar. Wrigley Field is a throwback to an era of baseball when players where underpaid and taking your kid to the ballpark was considered something of a rite…
It seems as though every major city in the United States has a Chinatown district located somewhere in the heart of downtown. New York and San Francisco have perhaps the best known of these, so it may come as a surprise that Chicago is actually home to the second largest Chinatown in the country, second only to the one in the Big Apple. Located near the south side of the city, Chinatown in a bustling community that is home to some of the best food in the city, whilst also having some must see sights for visitors. One of the most popular spots in the…
There are very few parks that have the distinction of being a registered historic landmark, but that is exactly what Washington Square Park in Chicago is. What is even more exciting is that the park continues the tradition of events that took place in that very area when the park first came into being back in 1842. At that time, the space was nothing more than 3 acres of donated land, but Washington Square Park, or Bughouse Square as it is more commonly known, developed over time and eventually became a place where people gathered to discuss community issues. Plenty of people still gather there,…
Union Station is a place of historical significance in Chicago. The station was constructed in 1925 and was at the time a nation railway hub. Currently, it is the major rail terminal of Chicago as well as the city’s last intercity rail terminal. The station is located to the west of Chicago River and is extended over more than nine city blocks. However, the most astonishing feature of the station is that it is not like any other ordinary stations. On the contrary, it is a beautiful reflection of the city’s architectural heritage. Once you come here, you will notice that the environment here is…
While there are at least a thousand and one different things to do in the Windy City, you would have to be at least a little bit crazy not to do a bit of shopping the next time that you visit Chicago. And though there are a number of different locations you could check out when in search of the best deals and most unique merchandise, no trip to the Windy City is truly complete without spending at least a few hours browsing all of the different stores that are in the Mart. Merchandise Mart in Chicago is one of the biggest mixed commercial and…
The "Bean" or Cloud Gate - 5.0 out of 5 based on 2 votes
Chicago is a fun place to visit and live. I lived there when I was younger for a little over five years. I last visited in July of 2013, and an attraction that I really wanted to see was the "Bean" or formally known as Cloud Gate. This sculpture was not created yet when I lived in Chicago, so I wasn't able to see the attraction when I lived in the city. Also, whenever I came into town to visit old friends from my childhood and my family who still lived in Chicago, I just never got the chance to see the Bean. However, when…
