While there are at least a thousand and one different things to do in the Windy City, you would have to be at least a little bit crazy not to do a bit of shopping the next time that you visit Chicago. And though there are a number of different locations you could check out when in search of the best deals and most unique merchandise, no trip to the Windy City is truly complete without spending at least a few hours browsing all of the different stores that are in the Mart.
Merchandise Mart in Chicago is one of the biggest mixed commercial and residential buildings on the face of the earth, and is one of the truly landmark structures anywhere on the Chicago River. Designed and built all the way back in 1930, the Mart as it is affectionately known as to native Chicagoans is absolutely breathtaking when just standing outside of this behemoth. With 25 different floors and well over 4,000,000 ft., the merchandise Mart in Chicago is so huge that it actually had very own ZIP Code.
Designed specifically as wholesale showrooms for a number of different design companies, you’ll be able to tour a number of incredible purpose built displays that will literally take your breath away. Just walking into the Merchandise Mart is an experience that one has to really go through all on their own, but you will never be the same once you have. Retail shops were opened for the general public in 1991, and they function as a gigantic mall that covers several floors. There are also a number of smaller businesses, radio stations, TV studios, a mixture of combined use designated areas throughout the building.
Maybe one of Chicago’s most photographed landmarks you’ll find anywhere in the city limits, you have to see this building and the interior all on your own. Hosting several conventions and art galleries throughout the year, there is something for everyone to do inside of the Merchandise Mart in Chicago.
