Located right in the heart of Chicago is the beautiful green space of Grant Park. This fantastic area is the place where you need to head if you want to feast your eyes upon the most famous monument in Chicago, the Buckingham Fountain.
Grant Park was originally conceived back in 1836, a couple of years before the incorporation of Chicago as a city. The original name of the park was known as Lake Park due to its closeness to the lake. In the latter half of the 19th century the area became completely unusable when it was flooded. However eventually all of this was flushed away which left the door open to create a brand new park, and that is what exists there today.
Whilst the majority of people head to this wonderful park for a relaxing day, or perhaps to go for a jog, stroll or cycle across the many parks, there are actually a number of sights to behold within the park. These are what seem to attract tourists the most.
The main attraction in the park is the absolutely stunning Buckingham Fountain. Whilst it is fantastic to look at during the day, it becomes even more majestic late on in the evening when it is lit up beautifully with choreographed lighting.
The Lincoln Statue located in Grant Park is one of five of them in the city of Chicago. This is a wonderful sight to behold in the park and you will see a number of people snapping away at the statue throughout the day. In addition to the Lincoln Statue there are a number of other statues and monuments which grace the park, many of them demonstrating remarkably high levels of grandeur.
The original remit of Grant Park said that no buildings were to ever be constructed on this land that had been set aside. There was one exception to this rule however, and that was the construction of the Chicago Art Institute. This building is part museum and part school. It is one of the most popular museums in Chicago and it is an absolutely stunning building. Inside you will find a plethora of art works from all over the world.
If you are visiting Chicago and are looking for a bit more of a relaxing day then you absolutely need to visit Grant Park. It really does boast high levels of tranquillity.
