If you are looking for an affordable way to travel the United States, then bus travel may be for you. There are several bus companies in the United States that can help you with your budget traveling.

Positives on Bus Travel.

First, lets talk about all of the positives of traveling by bus. There are plenty of them!

Traveling by bus is usually more affordable than any other means of traveling (airplane, car, or train). You can take the amount you are saving and splurge on other things for your trip (maybe a nice hotel or trying the local cuisine), or you can just keep the saved money in your own pocket. You can easily find bus tickets for under $100 round trip (with many being under $50), which is a huge amount of savings compared to others ways of traveling.

Another positive is that you won't have to drive yourself anywhere and you don't have to worry about driving in a new place. You can sit back and relax while all of the logistics and actual driving are done by someone else. This also means that you don't have to spend money on tolls, parking fees, or renting a car.

What should I know about traveling by bus?

If you decide to travel by bus for your next trip, there are several things you should remember. These include:

  • Buses usually have bathrooms in them. Just like with airplanes, they usually aren't the hugest things in the world, but they do the job.
  • On long one-way trips, usually there is a stop for food (such as at a McDonald's or Subway) and to stretch. These stops usually are for around 30 minutes, so make sure you make it back to your bus on time.
  • There are buses that only make a food stop (such as stated above), and there are others that may stop and pick up others.
  • There are also travel tour buses where you can tour different areas of the United States with a tour guide. You may stop for activities, restaurants, and more.

How do I find the cheapest bus fares?

If you think that the bus fares that you are finding are too high, you still have some other choices. Occasionally there will be crazy low prices on bus fares, you just have to look for them.

Compare prices. There are several different bus companies in the United States, and they usually are fairly competitive with their pricing. Check the different websites and see who offers the best value for you and your trip.

Purchase in advance. Usually with bus fares, the earlier you buy the better.

See if your student ID equals a discount. Some bus companies will give a discount if you show them proof of a student ID. Don't forget to carry that around with you because you can probably earn other discounts on your trip as well.

Search for $1 tickets. Bus companies such as Megabus occasionally offer very cheap bus fares, even some at $1. Search on their website and you will probably see a few of those.

Look for promotional codes. Before you buy your bus ticket, you should do a quick Google search and see if the bus company that you are interested in using offers any promotional codes. Usually they do and it can be a quick way to save an extra few dollars.

Have you ever traveled by bus? Why or why not?

I used to live four hours away from the closest airport, so if I wanted to hop on a plane that included a bus ride to the airport. The bus itself wasn't that bad, but coming home it could be kind of a drag. You get off your plane and then have a four hour bus ride...not home yet! It was, however, much cheaper than driving my car down there and paying for long-term parking.

Wow that would really stink to have to do both plane and bus! That is good that it is cheaper than driving your car to the airport though.
